Choose between importing and inspecting an MBOX
If you want the archive inside Apple Mail, use File → Import Mailboxes and select the MBOX source. Apple documents this built-in option in its mailbox import guide. MailFolio is useful when you want to inspect a separate archive without adding it to a mail account.
If the archive opens empty or takes a long time
Extract any ZIP first and select the actual mailbox data, not the enclosing export folder. Start with a smaller mailbox export to distinguish a size issue from a format problem. Keep the original archive; changing its filename extension does not convert PST or OST to MBOX.
Check the PDF before filing it
With Pro, export a selected message or the whole archive. Compare dates, sender details and representative messages with the source. A searchable text summary does not preserve every visual detail, and attachments need separate handling.

Use Apple Mail’s importer
Apple Mail can import mailboxes on Mac. Choose it if you want the old messages inside your working mail library rather than in a separate archive viewer.
Search the original account
If the service that produced the export is still accessible, searching it may answer a one-off question without any new software. Keep the MBOX when you need an independent local record.
What makes an MBOX viewer useful?
MBOX is an archive of multiple messages. A useful viewer should let you move between entries, inspect dates, senders and recipients, read bodies and headers, and find attachments. MailFolio provides a local archive list and search. A plain text editor can show raw separators and MIME encoding, but it is not a practical way to review a long mailbox.
A folder is not always the data file
Some mail exports put the mailbox data inside a directory whose name ends in .mbox. Select the actual file within it. If a viewer appears to open an empty archive, check the export’s structure and whether the source was compressed. Preserve the original folder and files before trying to rename or reorganise them.
Import versus independent inspection
Apple Mail’s built-in import is free and useful when you want the archive to become part of your mail library. A separate reader is better for one-time inspection or a handoff where you do not want to mix old messages into a current account. MailFolio does not sync changes back to the original mailbox and does not send mail.
Large archives need a verification pass
A very large mailbox takes time to parse and render. Try a smaller export to distinguish a performance issue from a corrupt source. Search for messages you know should be present, inspect dates and representative attachments, and watch for malformed MIME messages or damaged separators. Those issues can affect individual entries while other messages still appear.
Export for reading, retain for provenance
With Pro, MailFolio can export a message or, where supported, the entire archive to searchable PDF. A PDF is convenient for review, but it is not a replacement for the source MBOX or its separate attachments. Compare a few known messages with the output and store the original archive alongside the readable copy.
