Why did I receive winmail.dat instead of a PDF?
Find out why Outlook attachments can arrive as winmail.dat, how to recover an embedded PDF on Mac or iPhone, and what to ask the sender to change.
The PDF may be inside an Outlook TNEF container called winmail.dat. It is not necessarily lost or converted into a new document. Ask the sender to resend the original PDF as a normal attachment, or inspect the container to see which files it actually includes.

Recover the attachment, step by step.

Keep the original message
Save a copy of the winmail.dat attachment. Do not rename it to .pdf: changing the extension does not extract or convert its contents.

Ask for a clean resend
Ask the sender to compose a new HTML or plain-text message and attach the original PDF again. A fresh attachment is more useful than forwarding the same container. Their mail administrator may need to check TNEF settings if the problem continues.

Inspect the saved container
If you need to check it yourself, save the file to Files or Finder and open it in MailFolio. Look for the expected PDF among the embedded attachments; some containers have no PDF at all.

Verify the extracted document
Open the PDF in a reader and check the filename, page count and expected contents. Keep the original message with the extracted file if you need the correspondence context.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What winmail.dat can contain
- TNEF packages message formatting and other Outlook information; it can also carry file attachments.
- A TNEF-capable mail client may display the original content without showing the winmail.dat wrapper.
- A standalone PDF and a PDF printout of an email are different records. Choose the embedded attachment when you need the sender’s document.
Why it happens
Outlook and Exchange can send content in Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF). A receiving app that does not decode that format may show the wrapper as winmail.dat. The wrapper can include formatting and attachments, so its presence alone does not tell you whether the expected document is inside.
A short message to send back
“The attachment arrived as winmail.dat. Please create a new message in HTML or plain text and attach the original PDF directly. I need the PDF attachment itself, rather than a printout of the email.” If this happens repeatedly, ask the sender to involve their mail administrator.
If you cannot find a PDF after opening it
Check every embedded filename and compare the message with what the sender says they attached. A winmail.dat file is not guaranteed to contain a PDF, and a reader cannot recreate missing content. Request the original attachment again if it is absent or incomplete.
